Food

Brine shrimp are filter feeders, eating organic waste and algae.  In a tank of salty water brine shrimp will eat the green algae that will grown in the sunlight.  They will also eat brewers yeast.

In captivity, if the water is cloudy then it may be from overfeeding.  The particles of food remain in water uneaten in a suspension.  The food may also start to form a film on the surface of the water, this will prevent oxygen getting into the water.

Since the 1930's brine shrimp themselves have been bred as food for fish.  Most commercially available fish flakes contain them.  The amount of food recommended for brine shrimp bred as food themselves is usually far more than is required by the brine shrimp to survive.  The amount suggest is in fact design to 'fatten them up' ready for a tasty fish snack.
